Misadventures with seafood

Our dinner tonight was nothing short of hilarious. We had been to this seafood restaurant before and went back armed with a custom dictionary I had made to order in Vietnamese. No fewer than 10 people surrounded me as I tried to order mixed greens with mango and shrimp. Somehow in the midst of the excitement this got translated into a plate of cuttlefish (squid) and two of the most non-shrimpy shrimp I have ever seen.

Lita decided to text her friend for some eating suggestions and simply held up the phone to our waiter with her reply. Apparently she ordered us a sting ray. Yes, a sting ray. It was all delicious and we finished everything, but it was the most outrageous eating experience I have ever had. Ever dish was a surprise and the next one seemed to be more absurd than the previous one. Poor Lita, all she really wanted was noodles.

I wish we had THAT kind of Vietnamese food here! My favorite local restaurant is Pho Kauai.

ENJOY!

I wonder how they do their stingray. The Malay version is smothered in an amazing chili sauce and it’s one of my favourite Indochinese dishes! I’m glad you guys are having a good time in Vietnam, it’s a cool place!

Yeah, stingray is quite normal here in Singapore. Even someone as gastronomically shy as myself tried it. Once. It’s OK. You wait till you get to Cambodia. While en route between Siem Reap and Phnomh Penh, I bumped into some little girls who had tarantulas as pets. They were the lucky ones – in the market, there were basketfuls of fried ones.
