Just started a new biography of Abraham Lincoln, and I loved this quotation from a 1862 address:
The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate for the stormy present.
It reminds me of another favourite, this one by contemporary philosopher Seyla Benhabib (writing about migration policy):
We are like travelers navigating an unknown terrain with the help of old maps, drawn at a different time and in response to different needs.
